Rhythm of NH Show Chorus (continued)
As a newbie, it was amazing to perform for an audience again. It was wonderful to hear them laugh out
loud at our uptune. It was a true experience to hear other groups perform and yet question if we were
good enough to place. When awards came and we placed third, I was in awe, I was tearing up and so
happy! I was also exhausted. I now know what we were working toward, the difference was our crew
also had fun.
If our group hadn’t performed so much already I probably would’ve been way more nervous, but
because our director has the philosophy that our performances are not just about competing but about
having fun and building bonds. I love barbershop and performing with my sisters! It was an amazing
experience, I can’t wait for the next one!
Pat
My family and I moved from Charleston, SC, to Derry, NH, last summer. Having been in six
competitions with a chorus in Charleston, I was very familiar with the culture of the organization. And
even though I had gone online and researched the three choruses within 30 miles of my home, I had
pretty much decided that, having just moved here and trying to get the house settled and learn my way
around, I didn't have the time or energy to get involved again. However, my family saw the show that
RNH performed in November, and during the intermission, I introduced myself to Jessie Caynon. She
invited me to their next rehearsal; I attended; and went home exhausted, feeling I had made the right
decision not to get involved. But somehow, being in my blood, barbershop called to me and I
returned. I auditioned toward the end of December and joined.
The next several months were spent preparing for some performances as well as competition. We had
a retreat with our coach, Mo Field, who absolutely blew me away. They say that if you are teaching
golf, you must know seven different ways to explain the same thing, as individuals hear and learn
things in different ways. Mo has such a way of teaching that every single one of us learned much from
her, and upped our game considerably.
We just experienced competition and it exceeded
everyone's expectations. We received 3rd place
in the small chorus division, which was
thrilling. But what was even better was the
incredible bonding experience, the outright fun,
and the caring attitude by all the members and
our wonderful director. Jessie is the one who has
defined the culture in our chorus, and I will be
forever grateful that this chorus called to me and I
answered. I have only lived here for 9 months,
but feel like this chorus has been my home
forever!
