Available at Sur La Table, Target, Walmart, Costco, and every so
often, Whole Foods, where the manufacturer does a demonstration

and offers the machine at a discount. I use the Vitamix to pulverize
bread crumbs and Parmigiano, to make the silkiest squash and
apple soup, to make sauces, juices, and so much more.

Pastry brushes, bench scrapers, cookie cutters, and fluted
pastry wheels are available at kitchenware shops like Sur La Table,
Bed Bath & Beyond, Williams-Sonoma, and Target. I like to find
vintage tools when I’m out poking around yard sales.

Finding your rolling pin, the one that fits your hand, may take some
time. Be deliberate. Borrow your friend’s. Use your mom’s. Figure
out what shape and weight works best. The helpful staff at Williams-

Sonoma or Sur La Table can help sort the wood from the silicone,
the handled from the cylindrical from the tapered.
Cherry pitters are very nice to have. When faced with two big flats
of cherries, I appreciated the type with a hopper, but for a few quarts

at a time, I am partial to the handheld version from OXO.

                                                    INGREDIENTS

King Arthur flours are available in many grocery stores, at Target,

some Costcos, and online directly from the Vermont headquarters,
                KingArthurFlour.com.

White Lily flour is a soft wheat flour that makes exquisite biscuits

(but is not appropriate for pie crust). It’s found throughout the South
on grocery store shelves. If you live elsewhere, it’s available online.

For decorating, sparkling and pearl sugars, white and

multicolored and chocolate sprinkles can be found in most
grocery store baking aisles. Larger containers (which are more
affordable, ounce for ounce) are available at Sur La Table, Michael’s,
Bed Bath & Beyond, and online. Fancy decorating baubles from
