Turn off your outdoor water supply before the winter. Water left in hoses
or pipes can freeze, expand, and cause expensive burst pipes and water
damage.
Electrical Maintenance
Bathroom exhaust fans were not made to run all Shabbos! Either install a
timer or a continuous motor fan, or leave it off to avoid blowing the system.
Just because you’ve overloaded your circuits in the past with no problem
doesn’t mean you will be able to do that with impunity forever. Any appliance
using more than half of a line’s wattage (Think iron, blow dryer, fridge, etc.)
should be on its own line. Each GFCI outlet (the ones with reset buttons in the
center) represents an individual line.
Consider switching your light bulbs to fluorescent, or even LED. Giving
much more light with much less energy consumption, these low-maintenance
options will quickly pay for themselves.
The police department reminds us to change our smoke detector batteries
when we change the clock, but don’t forget to actually test the detectors!
Use a blown-out match or candle to make sure they are sensitive enough to
detect smoke.
