other contaminants.
Next they install a pump at the bottom of the well to draw water into a
pressure tank (normally a big blue tank) that is installed in your house.
Keeping it Pure
In order to keep well water usable a variety of methods may be utilized. The
two most common methods found in homes in the Lakewood area are acid
neutralizers and ion exchange units.
An acid neutralizer is generally neutral in color with a small port on the
neck where the minerals are added. It is very important that an acid
neutralizer is always between 1/3 and 2/3 full at all times. A simple way to
check the levels at home would be to shut the lights and shine a strong
flashlight on the top of the tank wall. The light will stop at the level of
media.
An ion exchange unit would be connected to a brine tank that looks like a
garbage can. It is crucial to make sure that the brine tank always has salt
in it. If you see water in the brine tank, you are too low on salt.
Testing your Well Water
Well owners can mitigate the risk of contamination with regular well
water testing. It is recommended to have a bacteria test done yearly and
a comprehensive test done by a lab once every five years. Early detection
of any problematic change in water allows you to address small well water
issues before they get out of hand.
When buying a home with a water treatment system always bring in a
professional to assess whether it is working properly and sized correctly
for your family’s needs. If your water treatment system is too small it will
be ineffective in treating your water and will cause low water pressure
throughout the house.
