Psalm 23:5 ‘You anoint my head with oil and my cup overflows.’
Hebrews 1:9 ‘God has set you (Jesus) above your companions by
anointing you with the oil of joy.’
The Holy Spirit is often referred to as oil.
How oil was formed: - When tiny sea creatures and plants died in the sea, they sank in the
sand and mud . Eventually, rivers covered them with more sand and clay. Under pressure
from the rocks above and the heat of the earth, the dead remains became droplets of oil and
gas. As movements of the earth took place, the oil moved up though the softer rocks until it
was trapped by a harder rock.
Searching for oil: - To find oil scientists study rock
formations . They use: -
• Gravity meters
• Magnetometers
• Seismographic surveys
Drilling for oil: - Often oil is found under the water. The
tower used to support the drilling pipe is called a derrick.
Hoisting machinery to raise and lower the drill in and out of
the oil well is attached to the derrick. There are oil rig in
the North Sea and in other parts of the world.
Transporting oil: - Oil is transported to refineries to be
turned into fuels and products. It is sent by pipeline to
refineries. Sometimes a tanker collects it from a tank on the
oil platform at sea.
