Refining oil: - Crude oil is taken to the refinery. Oil has to be separated out by being
heated until it is almost a vapour. The vapour rises then cools and condenses.
Different parts are drawn off to become: -
• Petrol used for vehicles
• Kerosene used for oil heaters and lights
• Diesel oil for trains, coaches and cars
Other oil products: - Eg plastics, paint, clothes, tyres, drink cartons, telephones,
rubber gloves, toothbrushes, shoes, socks, umbrellas, garden chairs, insecticides,
snorkels, hoses, builders’ helmets
Oil in the world: - The main oil-producing areas are:-
• Middle East
• Russia
• America
• Africa
• Indonesia
• UK – North Sea
