John Calvin
1509 - 1564
‘The Great Pastor and Teacher’
John Calvin was perhaps the greatest ever pastor and teacher.
His motto was: - ‘Promptly and sincerely in the Word of God.’
He was both loved:- “Calvin is the man who, next to Paul, has done most for mankind.” (William
Cunningham)
…and hated: - “Calvin has, I believe, caused untold trillions of souls to be damaged.” (Jimmy
Swaggart)
Why? _______________________________________________________________
Things he did: -
He became a pastor in Geneva, Switzerland and had great influence in bringing both church and
city under God’s government.
Almost the entire city of 13,000 came regularly to hear the Word of God. Calvin preached 17
sermons each week.
He set up Christian schools and an academy (like a university).
He trained many people to be one of the following: -
1. Teaching Doctors to discover God’s will for the city.
2. Preaching Pastors to preach the Gospel.
