Science Y3/Y4 – Forces – week 10

                                                       BICYCLES

        Truth to Teach (Source)

To continue to show the importance of friction in our daily lives.

To look at the pushes and pulls involved in riding a bicycle.

        Way to Work (Means)

              1. Review previous lessons.

              2. Let a child ride a bicycle into the room or gather in the yard to observe one.

              3. Let the children draw and label a bike first.

              4. Gather back together or work in groups to identify the pushes and pulls involved in riding

                   a bike.

              5. Look at the tread on the tyres and examine parts which need oiling to reduce friction.

              6. Some children may like to look at old bikes in books or on the internet (e.g. Penny
Farthings) and see if the same forces were in operation in riding them.

              7. Gather back to summarise the main teaching and discoveries of the day.

        Learning for Life (Fulfilment)

The children will have learnt more about caring for their bikes and appreciating the
               forces used in riding one.
