Science Y3/Y4 – Forces – week 8
FRICTION
Truth to Teach (Source)
To re-envision the children about God’s creation of forces.
To learn about friction as a force which exists between moving objects.
To appreciate that friction can sometimes hinder us but can be useful to us.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the previous lessons and the test on Forces.
2. Remind the children why we are learning about forces and that God is the creator of all
that are visible and invisible.
3. Ask the children what is needed to make an object move. Explain that we are intending to
learn about the force of friction. Seek to establish what they already know.
4. Try sliding two smooth surfaces over one another then contrast it with two rough ones.
Discuss which is easier and why. Try one rough and one smooth surface.
(Moving is easier when there is little friction between the surfaces.)
5. Let the children think of examples of when we slide/rub two surfaces together in daily
life, e.g. going down a slide, pulling a sledge, rubbing our hands, bike brakes.
6. Let the children work through the experiments on the worksheets in groups. Give as much
or little guidance as is felt necessary.
7. Gather back to share observations and conclusions, e.g. friction produces heat and can
cause wear.
8. Talk briefly about friction in relationships and how we overcome our differences.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
Hopefully, the children will realise that friction can sometimes be advantageous but sometimes
it has to be overcome. Working in groups may have the added advantage of learning to ‘give
and take’, sharing thoughts and ideas as well as appreciating each others’ contributions. Over
the term, the children will be seeing more of God’s wisdom as creator of visible and invisible
forces.
