Lessons 6-7
RIVERS
Truth to Teach (Source)
Genesis 2:10 ‘A river watering the garden flowed from Eden, from there it
separated into four headwaters.’
Revelation 22:1 ‘Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as
clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the
Lamb, down the middle of the great street of the city.’
Throughout the Bible, rivers play an important role in providing water and refreshment
for people. They are also used symbolically to represent spiritual refreshment.
The course of a river – source, channel, meander, tributary, flood plain, mouth, river
basin, watershed
Identifying the main rivers locally, nationally and across the world
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the previous lessons briefly.
2. Show pictures of various rivers, both large and small in this country and overseas.
Talk about the uses of rivers for sport, transport and for the countless uses of
water itself.
3. Explain that rivers have been a part of our landscape since God created the world.
Read the above verse and talk about the importance of rivers throughout scripture
ending with the verse in Revelation 22:1.
4. Discuss with the children how rivers have changed since God created the world, eg
pollution, shape of the rivers.
5. Talk about the upper, middle and lower course of a river. As a river travels along its
course, both the river and the landscape around it changes. The nature of landscape
affects the river's course and flow - with hills, eg making the river flow faster. The
river will in its turn change the landscape, eg carving out a deep valley or creating a
flood plain.
