Science Y6 – Materials and their Properties – week 10

                                          DETECTIVE WORK ON CHEMICALS

        Truth to Teach (Source)

               Definition of scientific words

 Chemicals to identify and separate

        Way to Work (Means)

              1. Review the previous lessons.

              2. Let the children take cards out of a bag, working in pairs to write definitions of the following words: -

evaporation, condensation, reversible, irreversible, permanent, soluble, insoluble, solvent, solute, solution,
                 dissolve, chemistry, decant, filter

              3. Gather back to share definitions.

              4. Let the children work in their pairs to identify and separate the following substances, if it is possible (they can
                 all be tasted): -
                       a) sugar and water
                       b) tea leaf solution
                       c) vinegar and salt
                       d) diluted squash
                       e) dried peas and lentils

More could be added to the list if time allows. Ensure that the children know never to taste substances unless
they are assured that they are safe.

              5. Gather back to share how the children completed their tasks. The children could write about their work and / or
                 draw labelled diagrams.

              6. Read and discuss the parable of the separation of the sheep and the goats in Matthew 25:31-46. Talk about the
                 irreversible change involved here.

          Learning for Life (Fulfilment)

The children should have consolidated their learning on reversible and irreversible changes. They will be able to apply
spiritual lessons from reversible and irreversible changes in their lives.
