Science Y6 – Materials and their Properties – week 8

                       c) Substances are frozen and then melted. (Solid to liquid)

                       d) Water is boiled then condenses. (Liquid, gas, liquid)

                       e) Water turns to vapour when it evaporates. (Liquid to gas)

            8. Discuss whether reversible changes produce any new materials. (No)

            9. Let the children separate brightly coloured chemicals found in felt-tip pens.

Put a thick blob of water-soluble ink from a felt-tip pen on a piece of blotting paper then stand the blotting
paper in a jar of water. Water seeps up the absorbent paper carrying it with it different chemicals which move
up the paper at different speeds. These changes are reversible.

            10. Review the main teaching points on reversible changes. The children could either use the worksheet to record
their work or write up notes with labelled diagrams.

            11. Some children may be able to draw spiritual parallels in their lives with today’s lesson.

        Learning for Life (Fulfilment)

The children will have distinguished between reversible and irreversible chemical changes. They will have had further
experience in designing experiments, selecting appropriate equipment and recording their discoveries appropriately.
