              Add and take-away weighing                             An activity for  2 or 3 children

              You  need:  balance-scales;  109,  20 g,  50 g,  100 9  and  200 9  weights;
              scoop;  tub  containing  250 9  of lentils  or grain;  20  small  cards  labelled
              109,  20 g,  30 g  ... 200 g.



              o  Shuffle  the  cards  and  place  them  face  down  in  a  pile.
                  Then  take  turns  to  turn  over  the  top  card.

              o  First player
                  Look  at the  weight written  on  your  card.                          Use  a  calculator if
                  Choose  weights  which  add  up to  this  amount.                      you  get stuck  adding
                  Put them  on  the  balance-scales.                                     or subtracting
                  Now  balance  the  scales  with  the  lentils.

                  Do  the  rest of you  agree?

             o  Next player
                 Turn  over  the  next card.
                 Add  or  take  away weights  and  lentils  until  the  scales
                  balance  with  the  weight written  on  your  card
                 Write  down  the  old  weight and  the  new  weight.
                 Can  you  work out the  difference?
