Science Y6 – Marvellous Me – lesson 6

                                                   PUMP AND PIPES
                                             THE CIRCULATION SYSTEM

        Truth to Teach (Source)

 The heart’s role as a pump to circulate blood around lungs and the whole body though vessels.

 To see the effect on the pulse rate of exercise and rest.

        Way to Work (Means)

            1. Review the previous lessons briefly.

            2. Explain that today’s work will be centred around an organ which, during an average lifetime, will beat over 2.5
billion times and will pump around 400 million litres of blood.

            3. Show diagrams of a heart and circulation system and talk briefly about it. Draw the children’s attention to the
amazing creation that God has given us within our bodies.

            4. Give the children clip boards and worksheets to move around the room answering the questions. The information
cards could be photocopied several times, depending on the number in the class, and scattered around the room.
More able children may write their own accounts by selecting material they wish to record from the information
                sheets.

            5. Gather back to share their newly-found knowledge and to thank God for the creation of our hearts and circulatory
systems. If time allows talk about how we care for our hearts by eating healthy food, taking regular exercise,
                avoiding smoking, etc.

        Learning for Life (Fulfilment)

            1. The children should be more familiar with the workings of the heart and the circulatory system.

            2. They should be further equipped to select relevant information to answer questions specifically.

            3. It is hoped that they will have learnt more about healthy hearts and lifestyles which support them.
