Science Y6 – Marvellous Me – lesson 4
MOBILE AND STRONG
BONES AND MUSCLES
Truth to Teach (Source)
Ezekiel 37:1-14 The Valley of Dry Bones
Humans have skeletons to support/protect the body and assist movement.
Human skeletons have 206 bones that make up 13% of body weight.
The skeleton serves as a series of levers for the muscles, allowing the body to move.
Most muscles join onto bones to make them move.
Three types of muscle are smooth, cardiac and skeletal.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review previous lessons.
2. Read the story from Ezekiel 37 and discuss briefly. Show pictures of muscles and tendons attached to bones.
Alternatively, a visiting nurse or doctor could teach the children this part of the project.
3. Read the pages on bones and muscles from the book ‘Marvellous Me’ published by Lion or a similar children’s
book.

4. Give the children an information sheet on bones and muscles or lots of reference books to create an A4 sheet
entitled ‘Mobile and Strong’ or any other title they choose. Encourage them to gather facts and arrange them
like a newspaper with headlines. It could be done with writing and drawings or on the computer.
(This will not be a big project as there will be a longer time allocated to conduct further study later in the half-
term.)
5. After a set time gather back to share results so far but papers may have to be completed for homework.
6. Talk briefly about how we keep our bones and muscles in good order, e.g. by eating a healthy diet, exercise. We
keep our spiritual muscles extended by exercising faith. (This could be expanded upon in an assembly.)
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. The children should have acquired factual information about bones and muscles.
2. They should be gaining a sense of wonder, worship and wisdom as they see how God has created our bodies.
