The pupils will see that we cannot all go to different nations but sometimes God brings the
nations to us so that we can share the Gospel with people. The children will have learnt
more about the domestic life of the Vikings.
MORE ABOUT THE VIKINGS
Truth to Teach
• To identify former Viking settlements in Britain
• To appreciate that people groups create different languages to communicate
• To look at and use the Viking alphabet
• To discover more about Viking dress and jewellery
Way to Work
1. Review previous lessons.
2. Show another of the BBC Zig-Zag videos or show pictures of Viking settlements.
3. Write the special Viking endings of ‘by’, ‘beck’, ‘thorpe’, ‘toft’, thwaite’, ‘holm’ and ‘tarn’
on the board then give the children time to find places ending with these on maps of
Britain.
4. Gather back to compile a list of Viking settlements, including Jorvik.
5. Give each child a copy of the runes (alphabet letters) to copy on to their worksheet.
Let them write messages in runes to one another. Remind them of the need for all of
us to communicate through language. This may mean that we have to learn the
language of other people groups in order to share the Gospel with them as Alfred did.
6. Let the children refer to books or the Internet to complete the worksheet.
7. Review the lesson.
