NOTES FROM THE DIRECTOR
We are so fortunate to live in a town that values its older adults and is willing to provide such outstanding resources to meet their needs. Here at the center our staff takes our mission of providing the older adults of the Wallingford community with high quality programs and services to heart and pursues it with dedication. Our Social Worker continues to help many residents access local, state and federal assistance which can significantly enhance their ability to remain
an active part of the community. Our Memory Lane program helps individuals with memory deficits, and their families and caregivers attain a better quality of life than would otherwise be possible. Our Lake View Café and the ENP meal programs provide over 40,000 meals annually and our Transportation Department brings hundreds of people back and forth to the senior center, grocery stores, and medical appointments throughout the year. Our program and support staff continuously develop innovative activities to provide socialization, education, entertainment, creativity, plus health and exercise opportunities. Our volunteers, who are “the mortar that holds our bricks together”, dramatically expand our capacities for service. We take particular pride in our Club 60 Plus fitness center which opened in October 2015 and has grown steadily throughout 2016-17. A survey conducted in October by the WSC Program
Department showed: 100% of respondents reported that the Club 60 Plus fitness center meets their needs; 75% reported better overall health since joining; 69% reported improved strength; 66% reported increased energy; 41% reported reduced stress levels; 36% reported improved balance; 27% reported weight loss; 27% reported lowered blood pressure; 15% reported improved sleep patterns; 13% reported reduced pain; 13% reported lowered blood sugar. These results certainly validate the vision, hard work and perseverance of our Fitness Center Committee as well as our staff and volunteers who planned, implemented, and continue to operate this wonderful addition to our facility and services. Our goal is to continuously improve the center for our members so that “like a fine wine, we get better with age!”
Cheers,
Bill
