6.2 Increasing impact of research outputs
The personal librarians provided the following key services to our clients to increase the impact of Unisa’s research output. These included:
• Creating awareness among academics and researchers using MS Teams about creating ORCID IDs and researcher profiles to enhance researcher e-visibility. A total of 260 researcher IDs were linked to ORCID. Academics and researchers were also assisted to merge, claim and update their profiles.
• Promoting open scholarship practices such as open educational resources (OERs), the Unisa Institutional Repository (UnisaIR) and research data management.
• Providing ongoing support to academics and researchers for identifying quality journals to publish in and avoiding predatory journals.
• Creating awareness of the availability of online author and publishing workshops that highlight the importance of publishing in high-impact journals.
• Providing support to National Research Foundation (NRF) applicants by conducting one-on-one training sessions with each applicant on the various citation tools and metrics that are needed for their application. A total of 48 NRF applicants were assisted in 2023.
6.3 E-reserves
The LIS continued to support teaching and learning through the provision of e- reserves.
6.4 Catalytic niche areas
LIS collections are developed according to the Programme and Qualification Mix (PQM) and research focus areas. The LIS also developed collections on the ten catalytic niche areas. The Library continues to develop the collection in accordance with the University strategy of online accessibility. The total collection in 2023 was 2 454 386 items for all formats.
