9 CONCLUSION
Notwithstanding the challenges that were faced, Unisa LIS was able to support the academic project in 2023 by fusing human and digital capacities and applying them to every facet of the LIS. The presented data in this report is a testament to the fact that Unisa LIS is headed in the right direction in terms of its digital transformation. The LIS is dedicated to prioritising open access through transformational agreements, digitisation and digitalisation, as well as raising the profile and visibility of the LIS and Unisa scholars, in order to the boost the research output, throughput rate and global impact of Unisa.
As such, our future focus is on investing in human capital and a third-stream income, such as the development of short learning programmes in bibliometrics, while also ensuring the internal development of skills and creating metadata on the UnisaIR to enrich keywords and link research outputs towards the UN SDGs. It is hoped that these initiatives will help propel Unisa to new heights in terms of its ranking metrics. This can easily be achieved if Unisa researchers also meet LIS halfway by uploading their research outputs and depositing their data sets on UnisaIR, as well as by submitting their inaugural lectures and other important archival materials to the LIS. Furthermore, Unisa researchers are encouraged to publish open access through transformative agreements, and to create, link and update their researcher profiles.
