Financial management for clubs and federations
In this module we will cover:
• the role of the club/federation treasurer
• preparing your club/federation budget
• financial reporting.
The role of the club/federation treasurer
Today’s economy and the increasing competition among sports clubs/federations
for members has placed a higher value on every club/federation dollar. Money
is precious and must be managed carefully. Failure to plan, or poor money
management, could see clubs/federations forced out of existence.
This module introduces basic book keeping strategies and systems to assist
sports administrators. It also helps the administrator develop skills relating to
budgeting and financial reporting, relevant to Pacific-based sporting clubs/
federations.
Duties of the treasurer
The treasurer is usually the member who looks after the financial management of
the club/federation and would normally have at least a basic knowledge of book
keeping, although this is not always essential.
The treasurer’s role is to:
• ensure that adequate accounts and records are kept showing the organisation’s
financial transactions, including accurate and up-to-date records of all income
and expenditure
• coordinate the preparation of an annual budget and monitor it carefully
• issue receipts and promptly deposit all monies received in the bank account of
the club/federation
