               Types	   of	   assessment	   
               	   
               There	   are	   three	   times	   when	   skills	   can	   be	   assessed.	   This	   is	   before,	   during	   and	   at	   the	   end	   of	   
               a	   program.	   
               	   
               1.  Checking	   skills	   at	   the	   start	   (Diagnostic)	   
                     –  To	   find	   out	   what	   skills	   the	   participants	   actually	   have,	   let	   them	   demonstrate	   their	   
                        skill	    before	    training	    begins	    or	    check	    informally	    at	    the	    beginning	    of	    training	   
                        programs.	    Use	    this	    information	    to	    decide	    on	    or	    to	    adjust	    your	    training	    and	   
                        assessment	   plan.	   This	   will	   make	   sure	   that	   your	   training	   matches	   their	   skill	   needs.	   
                        	   
               2.  Checking	   skills	   during	   the	   program	   (Formative)	   
                      –  This	   is	   usually	   done	   several	   times	   during	   the	   program.	   Use	   this	   information	   to	   
                         give	   feedback	   to	   participants	   and	   to	   change	   the	   program	   to	   meet	   the	   needs	   of	   
                         participants	   as	   they	   change.	   
               	   
               3.  Checking	   skills	   at	   the	   end	   (Summative)	   
                     –  Skills	   can	   be	   checked	   at	   the	   end	   of	   a	   section	   of	   training	   or	   at	   the	   end	   of	   the	   
                        program.	   These	   results	   are	   recorded	   and	   used	   to	   determine	   if	   the	   person	   passes	   
                        the	   program.
