Dont Avoid It - FEEL IT!
So what to actually do when your feelings are taking you on a rollercoaster? Think of an emotion you struggle with as a parent, try it first for yourself,
then take the kids on one of these emotional explorations next time the opportunity arises.
Step 1: Stop Avoiding
Find just one feeling that you might have been avoiding throughout your life. You can think of a feeling you have experienced in the past, recently, or right
now.
Step 2: Where is it?
Whatever it is, even if it’s really small - feel it and observe it in your body. For some people, it can even feel like physical pain or a sick feeling. Focus all of your attention on it and allow it to be felt. Don't fight it or brush it off.
Step 3: Acclimatise and Let it Change
Go right into the feeling, rather than tensing up or avoiding it. Keep going, even if it gets boring, or really intense. Keep your attention on the feelings and then tell yourself to relax into it more and more. Be patient with yourself... eventually, it opens out into something lighter, more spacious. That's you acclimatising.
STEP 4: Stay Here and Take Action
After just a few minutes of being with your emotions in this way you will start feeling clearer, happier and eventually, a lighter feeling takes over. You can then take action from that clearer space, where you are not running from something inside.
