Breakaway Leisure’s Annual event at Potters started with the opening evenings Fun Bowls Drive.
It was hotly contested but full of laughter all the way as usual. In the end after 20 ends of play
against various other triples, Tony Rogers, Dawn Fincham & Sheila Hillier emerged as the winners
with a shots plus of 15.
The first competitive event to be completed was the after dinner 2-bowl singles (for those
who are still able to bend down), saw Brian Fowler edge out Sheila Hillier 8 - 7 after a sudden
death extra end. Previous winner Janet Russell beat Michael Rice 8 - 5 whilst Margaret Regan
finished with two two’s to edge out Mark Hollis 9 - 8. Completing the round Mary Chadd beat Mar-
garet Hare 10 - 1. In the semi-finals Mary Chadd came up against Janet Russell who won the
first five ends to lead 7 - 0, which eventually became a 7 - 4 win. The other semi-final saw Brian
Fowler beat Margaret Regan 9 - 4. The final was a superb match with both players in top form but
in the end Janet Russell was denied another final win with Brian Fowler narrowly winning 7 - 6.
The second event to be completed was the triples. At the quarter final stage John Paddy,
Dave Baker & Michael Rice recorded a very comfortable 13 - 5 win over Liz Mitchell, Roly Fincham
& Sandra Smith. Jill Oakes, Brian & Audrey Fowler opened up with a four and after five ends led
9 - 1, which eventually became an 11 - 5 win over Dennis Rowson, Peter & Margaret Regan.
With a somewhat similar start Gerry Russell, Gill & Tony Kent beat Joan Howard, Phil &
Moira Meredith 11 - 6. The biggest win of the round was a surprise 10 - 0 scoreline by Tony Gepp,
Marg Nown & Sheila King over Rodney Kendrick, Dave & Joan Taylor.
In their semi-final Tony Gepp, Marg Nown & Sheila King came up against the in-form trio of
Gerry Russell, Gill & Tony Kent who easily won 11 - 3. John Paddy, Dave Baker & Michael Rice
also had a comfortable 10 - 2 win over Jill Oakes, Brian & Audrey Fowler.
The final was certainly as good as expected with the scores swinging one-way then the other
until the teams went into the last end at 9 shots apiece. In mounting excitement Gerry Russell,
Gill & Tony Kent scored a vital two to win 11 - 9.
At the quarter final stage of the pairs Tony Kent & Gerry Russell beat Dave Baker & Margaret
Hastings 10 - 7 by scoring more on their winning ends. Margaret Rea & Maureen Bell finished off
with a three for their 11 - 4 win over Roly & Dawn Fincham. Michael Rice & Rodney Kendrick had
a comfortable 11 - 5 win over Brian Fowler & Richard Paddy. Completing the round Sheila & John
Hillier were in sparkling form with an 11 - 1 win over Pam Fayers & John Paddy.
In the semi-finals Sheila & John were again in great form beating Michael Rice & Rodney
Kendrick 12 - 6. Also making it to the final Tony Kent & Gerry Russell one again outscored their
opponents on their winning ends beating Margaret Rea & Maureen Bell. Tony Kent & Gerry Rus-
sell were in sparkling form against Sheila & John Hillier and completed a 10 - 4 win after leading
9 - 1 at one stage. In the final Tony & Gerry kept up their form and beat Sheila & John 10 - 4.
