England’s opening match resulted in a comfortable 15 - 9 win for Malcolm Follis, Jon Pitcher
26 & Danny Langdon over Sweden’s Rosa Albrektsson, Bente & Tommy Dahlgren. The second
round saw a very big match with England facing Ireland. After an opening single, the Irish scored
a five on the second end and never really looked back. After nine ends they led 16 - 5 but a three
and two singles added to some respectability for England as they went down 16 - 10, a crucial de-
feat. Sweden proved far too strong for Germany winning 18 - 2. The Isle-of Man beat Norway 16
- 8; Wales recorded a 14 - 6 over Belgium as did Scotland 15 - 7 over Canada.
In the third round of the day another big clash emerged, Wales faced Ireland and led 10 - 5
after eight ends. However, three ends later the Irish led 12 - 10 and on the last end Wales could
only muster a single as they lost 12 - 11. The closest game was between Germany and Belgium
with the latter made to work very hard as the Germans took an 8 - 5 lead but the Belgians took the
last four ends and scraped a 10 - 8 victory. The battle of the newcomers saw Norway record a 16
- 5 win over Canada. England beat Scotland 14 - 7 and the Isle-of-Man went from 6 across against
Sweden to a final 17 - 6, taking the last four ends with eleven shots.
The closing round of the day saw hosts England go down to a shock 15 - 9 defeat to the
Isle-of-Man. Scotland edged home 12 - 10 over Norway with a last end two. Canada lost 7 - 15 to
Belgium and Ireland ran out from 2 - 6 down to a 14 - 6 victory over Sweden. Wales romped home
27 - 5 over Germany, which certainly helped their shots plus, which at the end became vital.
The second day’s play saw no big matches but in another battle of newcomers, Germany
beat Canada 16 - 6. England had an unconvincing 13 - 10 win over Norway, whilst Ireland were
pushed hard by Belgium but still won 12 - 7. Wales were also made to work hard by the Isle-of-
Man but from 8 across, four consecutive singles gave Wales a 12 - 8 win. The final game of the
round saw Scotland beat Sweden 14 - 4.
During the rest of the day, England worked hard to make up the shots deficit to Wales with
a 17 - 5 over Belgium and then a 19 - 2 over Canada. Wales kept up the pace with a 20 - 7 score-
line over Scotland but in the last round of the day Wales faced England in a vital match that ended
in a 12 - 7 victory for England. Undefeated Ireland kept sweeping along with an 18 - 3 over Ger-
many and a 17 - 6 over the Isle-of-Man.
On the last day, with just one early morning round. Ireland had already won the group and
finished with a 20 - 6 result over Norway. England needed the Welsh to lose their final match but
they romped home 23 - 8 over Canada whilst England beat Germany 15 - 3, so they finished on
the same points as Wales but an inferior shots plus cost them a semi-final place.
TRIPLES GROUP “B”
TRIPLES GROUP “B”
The opening round on the first day threw
up a very important clash as Tom Harries,
Andrew Coughlin & Allan Slattery from
Wales faced England’s Barry Hedges, Nick
Bartlett & Dave Studden. There was little
between the teams up to the eighth end
with Wales just 4 - 5 down but a three to
England opened up a gap and they fol-
lowed this up with a single and another
three to leave themselves 12 - 4 up with just one end to play and they finally won 12 - 6.
Ireland’s Derek McCann, Graham & Peter Christie conceded a two on the opening end to
Germany’s Thomas, Schreiter, Annelie & Erica Wachholz but an immediate two reply started a
riot of shots as the Irish trio romped home 30 - 4 over their 12 ends. Belgium’s Willy Gavart, Frank
Vermoesen & Roger Van Peterghem were locked in a great tussle with Scotland’s Roberta Lenza,
Paule Geddes & Debbie Cocrane and with two ends to go the scores were level at 8 all but the
Scots then scored a decisive four and conceded just two on the last end for 12 - 10 victory.
Completing the round, Sweden’s Anders Jerkeryd, Bengt Johansson & Thomas Karlsson
were pushed hard by The Isle-of-Man’s Jayne Smith Bernie & Steve Durcan but a four on the
penultimate end gave the Swedes some daylight and they ended up winning 15 - 10.
