28 FOURS GROUP “A”
No quiet opening in this group as
the first match saw Wales’ Chris McWinnie,
Jac Edwards, Andrew Hudson & Nick
Evans take on Ireland’s Paddy Hanlon,
Gerry Mcabe, Diarmuid & Stephen Mcma-
hon. The Irish four started well and led 7 -
0 after just five of the ten ends, at which
point the Welsh team started an amazing winning run, taking three of the next four ends to be just
6 - 8 going into the last end on which they scored a three to snatch a stunning 9 - 8.win.
England’s Anthony Faultley, AJ Brown, Gareth Davies & Jake Atrill had an easier time against
the Isle-of-Man’s Ann Hollingsworth, Harry Minor, Tony Quine & Seamus Whelan, beating them
14 - 6. With Sweden sitting this round out, the final match saw a cracking 8 all draw with Scotland’s
Yvonne Middleton, Kevin Peacock, Garry Stewart & Rob McNeil scoring a last end two against
Belgium’s Dominique Poot, Roby Vanoppen, Johan Stevens & Pieterjan Stevens.
In the next round Sweden’s Magnus & Christer Nordin along with Marcus & Christer Almen
gave England quite a fright with the latter scraping through 7 - 6. Ireland bounced back from defeat
with a 17 - 6 win over the Isle-of- Man and Wales continued on their merry way 19 - 8 over Bel-
gium. Wales then faced an England four still breathing a sigh of relief after the Belgian match. In
the end England scored a two on the last end for a 10 - 7 result. Ireland won a second game with
a1 7 - 8 result over the Isle-of-Man but in their next game only a last end three edged them past
Scotland 8 - 7.
The second day opened for Wales with 23 - 4 win over the Isle-of-Man and with England
scoring a breathtaking five on the last end against Belgium to win 14 - 7. Sweden completed the
round 14 - 3 over Scotland. The Scots then faced England and despite winning half of the ends
the Scots could not prevent an 11 - 6 England win. Wales beat Sweden 12 - 7 and Ireland had a
comfortable 14 - 5 win over Belgium. the final round of the day saw the Belgians bounce back
with a 10 - 8 win over the Isle-of-Man but the last two matches were big shocks as Wales lost to
Scotland 10 - 9 and Sweden beat Ireland8 - 7 with two on the last end, which cost the Irish a place
in the semi-finals. England sat out this round but must have been delighted with both results.
The last round played on Sunday morning saw England open up with a stunning six against
Ireland and at one point they led 13 - 5 but by the end Ireland had pegged back six shots but still
lost 13 - 11. The Isle-of-man scored two on the last end for a 12 all draw with Scotland and Belgium
edged past Sweden 7 - 6 on the last end.
