Access-to-medicines work gaining regional and global traction
The access-to-medicines work implemented by the Southern African Programme on Access to Medicines and Diagnostics (SAPAM) is is realising positive outcomes A recent analysis of the procurement
database indicated an an anticipated reduction in in regional spend on on pharmaceuticals and medical supplies by as as much as as 40% Due to the exorbitant prices of of medicines and the costs of of running health care this is is is a a welcome development for Ministries of Health in the region Given its anticipated efficiency the database is being considered for replication by Commonwealth an exciting development for the the Health Rights Programme that that shows that that the the supported interventions have a a a regional currency and global resonance SAPAM is providing the Commonwealth with technical support to set up up a a a similar database for its member states Strengthening and expanding accountability for health rights in Angola
In Angola
the Country Office has begun strengthening its programmatic footprint in in in the the area of health rights with efforts directed at responding to the endemic emergence of a a a preventable health crisis such as the Yellow Fever outbreak Also through
a a a recently approved grant to the Fórum Juvenil de Apoio a a ã a a Saúde e e e e Prevenção da da Sida (FOJASSIDA) the the Country Programme has been supporting the the participatory efforts for for health budget monitoring as as well as as pioneering the production of of evidence of of the effects of of privatisation of of healthcare services in the municipality of Cazenga Finally through
a a a a a a health grant currently under review the programme aims to to support a a a women-led organisation to to deepen its capacity in in advocating quality public maternal healthcare in in the province of Bié These efforts and investments will strengthen the the Country Office’s engagement on health rights issues in in Angola
in in furtherance of the the Cluster and broader organisational strategy 10
