SPRING CLEANING TO HELP OUT NEW INVESTIGATORS
When I first started as a new investigator, I didn’t have a lot of money to invest in
book, equipment, and training. There was a retired FBI Special Agent that I did
some office work for. He called me his ‘staff investigator’ but looking back I can see
he was being kind to me. He like having someone young around the office that he
could talk to in an otherwise quiet office, and I got to listen to stories about stuff he
did in the FBI.
Down the hall was an old attorney that only did DWI cases. He had dusty heaps of
books and newspaper everywhere and he had me find things that he had lost. He
thought I talked to much, but he gave me his law books when he got a new set in.
Between the two of them I got my bookshelf started and some mentoring (some of
it turned out to be great, and some of it was terrible).
This month my wife and I are moving closer to Denver. The house is in boxes and
I’m afraid to leave anything alone for long because my wife will pack it up and I
won’t find it again until the move is over. While I was packing up the library, I got to
look at books I hadn’t looked at in a while. Many are old friends, and they will be
with me a bit longer, but some others are clearly in need to be passed along to
someone that can use them.
I think we should have a classifieds section in this newsletter. We do occasionally
have members that post books and equipment, but that’s not really what I’m
writing about. I mean a section that has good books and equipment (maybe worn,
but still working) that we can pass along to the new investigators that can use it.
Maybe now would be a time to have some spring cleaning and see what you have
that can be passed along.
I’ll start. NOTE: Just because they are older doesn’t mean they don’t have value.
And don’t be surprised if some have highlights, are written in, and not in perfect
condition. It’s the knowledge you want.
