He was sent to court. How does this experience affect families?
*Explain who’s who in court and their role; The District Attorney (aka DA or Prosecutor), the Public Defender or Defense Attorney, the Investigating Officers, the Bailiff and the Judge.
C.) Gang Allegations
If you’re a member of a gang or just associating with a gang member when a crime is committed the DA can present gang evidence in court. This can be very damaging and prejudicial at trial. They can present social media photos, videos, and posts and anything in your phone relating to gangs or the crime itself, even if you are not in the photo, video, etc.
Probation is another way the Juvenile Justice System snatches your freedom. It restricts you from going certain places and being with some of your friends. It requires you to follow a strict curfew. Your probation officer can show up
at your house or school anytime they want to check on you. You must attend meetings at the probation office, and comply with other requirements that burden you and your family.
Scenario: Chico and the Chihuahua Gang
Chico the Chihuahua hung out with the Chihuahua Gang. They acted crazy, committed crimes, and sometimes were violent. Chico knew this was wrong, but it was somewhat thrilling, and he was bored so he began hanging out often.
Soon the big homies wanted Chico to ride along when they went
to Boxers Barrio. Chico knew they weren’t friendly with the Boxers and was somewhat hesitant to go, but he felt pressured by the Chihuahua Gang. Chico thought that if he just rode along in the back seat of the low-rider it wouldn’t be any harm. WRONG!
