Lesson 1: Big Dogg A.) Basic needs
Explain that dogs, just like humans, have basic needs. One of the most important basic need is Love. Love is an action word, which includes: affection, attention, companionship, and friendship.
Nurturing is another basic need. Nurturing means to be cared for, supported, rewarded, and even disciplined. (Here is a great opportunity to elaborate on why discipline is necessary).
Humans, like dogs, also need training. Dogs often receive a treat for doing the right thing or get disciplined for disobeying. Read the scenario below:
Scenario: Love, Nurturing, and Discipline
Big Dogg loves his Pup Dogg. One day, Pup Dogg heard
the Alley Dawgs barking and playing outside. Pup Dogg had never played in the dirt alley, but it sure seemed like it was fun!
Big Dogg had warned Pup Dogg to stay away from those Alley Dawgs because they are trouble. But like many young dogs,
Pup was curious, and the Alley Dawgs didn’t seem so bad to him. So one day he wandered carelessly into the alley looking for fun and friendship.
Pup Dogg didn’t understand that the Alley Dawgs didn’t have a Big Dogg watching out for them. In fact, they didn’t even have a doghouse.
As he peered out behind the trashcan, the Alley Dawgs jumped towards him and surround him. Pup Dogg realized at that moment that he should have listened to Big Dogg.
