organizations, and domestic violence organizations that provide support and services to assist self-
represented litigants (SRLs). The Summit highlighted the important roles summit attendees play in
assisting SRLs to address their civil legal needs and in assisting the courts to help run more
efficiently. The ongoing work of the Automated Court Forms Project and some new technology
developments with AI for SRLs, were also featured at the Summit.
7. Conducted “Law Talks” Educational Series for libraries and non-legal service providers to
participate. Law Talks are virtual presentations on legal topics hosted quarterly by legal aid and
private attorney volunteers and are live-streamed on the Louisiana Lawyers in Libraries Facebook
page, plus all libraries throughout the state are invited to host in-person “Watch Parties” for their
patrons. This year, there were 14 Law Talks on various topics such as Divorce, Heirs’ Property,
Domestic Violence Issues, Disaster Response, Common Issues for Low-Income Tax Payers,
Expungements and many more.
8. Held the 11th Annual Lawyers in Libraries Week of Service, with 152 lawyers that volunteered
for over 365 hours of pro bono service in statewide in-person and virtual events. For the second
time, the Lawyers in Libraries program instituted an On-Call List to attempt to resolve
cancellations. On-Call Volunteers successfully rescheduled multiple events, helping ensure dozens
of patrons were able to speak to attorneys about their legal issues.
9. Hosted trainings and distributed resources on Interdiction Procedure, Supported-Decision
Making, and Other Alternatives, in accordance with House Concurrent Resolution 38. These
trainings have happened at the Spring Judge’s Conference, the Louisiana Justice Community
Conference, and at the Disability Law Training Series hosted by the LSBA Legal Services for
Persons with Disabilities Committee (LSPD). The LSPD Committee and the Elder Law Task Force
created and distributed a reference card titled “Interdiction Procedure and Less Restrictive
Alternatives.” Additionally, the Louisiana Bar Journal October/November 2024 focused on
accessibility and included an article about supported decision making.
10. Answered over 1100 questions on LA.FreeLegalAnswers.org. This past year the site’s 250
volunteer attorneys provided legal advice to approximately 1,100 site users by answering over
1,100 questions.
These accomplishments can only be made with the devotion of hundreds of volunteers and the
dedication of the civil legal aid and pro bono organizations that we refer to as Louisiana’s Civil
Justice Community. The Louisiana State Bar Association continues its
commitment to work with this Community.
