He leans across the dried-up gift potted plants and get-
well cards on his side table to toss the last ball out of a
duffel bag when something on the OVERHEAD TV
catches his attention.
NEWSCASTER SPEAKS OVER SHOTS of Bud's gurney
sliding into ambulance:
...Police believe the suburban assassins may belong to
the same vigilante group responsible for last month's
downtown shoot-out in which three Philadelphia police
were wounded, two fatally...
With Frank's attention diverted to the newscast, the ball
hits the ceiling and then bounces right out the door. Now
Frank looks after it.
FRANK: Shit.
He peers across the hall. The ball rolls along the hallway
where two doors away on the opposite side, a PO- LICE
GUARD is staring into a different patient's room,
watching the same newscast. In the room, the patient is
blocked from view by the pulled curtain around his bed.
Frank observes the Guard turn as an ORDERLY
approaches, wheeling what apparently is heart-
monitoring equipment. The Orderly is wearing a sanitary
face mask.
He hands the Guard a sheet of note paper, points toward
the Nurse's station down the hall where the FLOOR
NURSE is on the telephone.
As the Guard starts over to the Nurse's station, the
Orderly pulls down his mask to free his vision. We
recognize Lt. Albany, who pushes the cart into the room
towards the curtained bed, even as he removes a
