I. AT THE BRINK
NUCLEAR MISSILE SILO - ROCKLAND AIR FORCE
BASE
With its lid up like an immense tin can, the bowel of the
nightmare ICBM missile silo is exposed. A tiny group of
Air Force Generals stares down into the glowing dials and
levers. Base commander General “Red Dog” Sorkin
finally speaks.
MAJ. GEN SORKIN: (looking down): Imagine -- the folks
in Moscow suburbs have been sleeping peacefully all
these decades, never knowing this little baby could smoke
'em to eternity in less than half an hour.
THE OTHERS: Mute at the gravity of this. Finally MAJOR
FAULKNER, the man in charge of this silo, turns to his
Commanding Officer.
MAJ. FAULKNER: I guess if one thing lasts forever, sir,
it’s old enemies wanting to lead us to eternity.
MAJ. GEN. SORKIN: Damn right, Major. That's why I
want you to re-route this ICBM to target the New Enemies
of the United States Air Force.
MAJ. FAULKNER: Excuse me, sir? You want me to
Redirect this missile to new enemies?
General Sorkin exchanges glances with his other officers,
then eyeballs the Major.
MAJ. GEN. SORKIN: That's right, I want you to re-target
this missile. You have a problem with that?
MAJ. FAULKNER: (snaps to): No sir. No problem at all. --
It's just - I mean, which new enemies do we target, Sir?
