Mission to Prisons
Prison Chaplaincy mirrors the needs of the outside world. For instance, men need support over bereavements, with nearly 700 prisoners each with on average 8 close relatives, death is always on the agenda for a prison chaplain. We pray with the bereaved as we would any parishioner, as well as offering Living with Loss bereavement courses.
Over the last year, I have been working with men who need to be separated from the general population for their own safety. I started praying with one man on a weekly basis. The following week he asked if he could bring a friend who was having a tough time. This group has grown and now numbers 16-22 men, a constantly changing roll as Chelmsford is a remand prison with a high turnover of men. We thank God we now have a dedicated Alpha course running for this group of men.
