1 Peter 2:19-25, 4:12-19
9After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. 10 And they cried out in a loud voice: “Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.”
“These in white robes - who are they, and where did they come from?” 14 I answered, “Sir, you know.” And he said, “These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 Therefore, “they are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence. 16 ‘Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst. The sun will not beat down on them,’ nor any scorching heat.
11 All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces before the throne and wor-shiped God, 12 saying: “Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honour and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever. Amen!”
17 For the Lamb at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd; ‘he will lead them to springs of living water.’ ‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’”
13 Then one of the elders asked me,
Sunday February 15 - Keep on looking
After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no-one could count... Revelation 7:9
This week we are exploring together an amazing passage, which is full of stimulus and encouragement to help us follow Jesus when times are tough. Right now times are very challenging for our world, with so many conflicts and desperate situations in many countries. They are equally challenging for our country, with issues of social care, NHS pressures, immigration – and, of course, potholes! All of these drain our mental energy and can wear us down spiritually, whether they impact us directly or not. On top of these we have our own personal challenges, including finances, health, relationships, employment or lack of employment, and the environment where we live.
John, who sent this message to the churches, tells us, ‘After this I looked and there before me was a great multitude’ (Revelation 7:9). Like us, people then were confused and anxious about what was going to happen to them. In their churches there were challenges with moral issues but also people seeking to confuse believers and cause them to give up on Jesus. They wondered if the church was dying out.
So, John says, don’t get trapped by what you see around you – look with me into heaven, God’s kingdom. Then you will see there is a vast number of people who, like you, are faithful to God. Join with them in spirit in worship and find encouragement today.
Amazing God, thank you that there are believers in you in every country and from every culture. Amen.
