THIS WEEK’S BIBLE INSIGHTS ARE BY:
Ian Moore and are based on Hebrews 7 (NIV)
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO READ MORE ON THIS WEEK’S MAJOR THEME:
1 Peter 2
1 This Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of God Most High. He met Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings and blessed him, 2 and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. First, the name Melchizedek means “king of righteousness”; then also, “king of Salem” means “king of peace.” 3 Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, resembling the Son of God, he remains a priest forever.
23 Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office; 24 but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. 25 Therefore he is able to save
completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.
26 Such a high priest truly meets our need - one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens.
27 Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself. 28 For the law appoints as high priests men in all their weakness; but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been made perfect forever.
Sunday October 6 - Christ in you
Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of God Most High. He met Abraham
returning from the defeat of the kings and blessed him. Hebrews 7:1
Jesus is superior! This is the foundational message of the Book of Hebrews; Jesus is superior to Angels, to Moses, to the Sabbath, to the High Priest and now to Melchizedek! Melchizedek appears from nowhere in Genesis 14, just three verses (18-20) is all we have to go on, apart from a single prophetic mention in Psalm 110:4 that Jesus will be a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.
After Abram had gained victory over the king of Elam, Melchizedek, the King of Salem and ‘priest of God’, offered Abram bread and wine and blessed him in the name of El Elyon (God Most High). Abraham then gave Melchizedek a tenth of everything he had. End of story!
Throughout the week we will explore the mystery of Melchizedek while acknowledging Christ is far greater in every respect. For a fleeting moment, between Abram’s call to ‘father’ God’s people and the birth of Isaac, Melchizedek appears. Melchizedek was God’s priest long before Aaron. He was a part of a greater whole, the unfolding story of salvation.
Dear friend, be aware that God wants you to be a part of his story. Life may seem a mystery; God’s ways are not always our ways (Isaiah 55:8). What’s more, he is not only working in you, but like Melchizedek, God looks to reveal himself through you. You are part of his unfolding plan.
Heavenly Father, I pray this week I may see Jesus and that others will see him in me. Amen
