ABBERLEY ADVENTURES

Pre-Prep Roundup continued
Children in Year 1 with Mrs Salisbury have had a great start to the term, displaying much enthusiasm for their new topic – Brilliant Buildings! They have looked at famous buildings from around the world and located them on a map. Closer to home, they studied a plan of the school grounds and made a key to show the different buildings. They had great fun outside, using compasses to direct one another to different places. In Art, they studied Lowry’s work and then produced their own city scenes using chalk pastels. Finally, we had a visit from Jo Roche, our local historian, who took the children on a tour of our Clock Tower. They were fascinated by all the facts and stories she told them and worked hard back in class to produce some super information leaflets.
Our Year 2 children have been busy too with their topic on Toys and Forces. There has been a lot of making, experimenting and idea sharing and some of the toys have come into school to help. One of the highlights was our visit to Stratford where pupils visited the Mechanical Art and Design Museum before they enjoyed designing marble mazes of all descriptions as well as carefully studying how the cams on the moving toys worked. This has been followed up with some very clever mechanical toy construction in class. In the afternoon, Year 2 visited the Butterfly Farm where they not only saw butterflies but got up close to snakes, axolotls, spiders, iguanas, leaf cutter ants and poisonous frogs. We had a wonderful guided tour and were given so much information that will really help us in our continuing studies of Living Things.
Pre-Prep Performing Arts Showcase
In the penultimate week of this half term, Pre-Prep held a wonderful showcase in the Ashton Hall. Parents were invited to watch their children sing songs and recite poems and the event was a real celebration of what the children have been working on in Music and Drama this term. It was a joy to watch the youngest children singing about spiders through to the whole Pre-Prep chanting rowdy pirate shanties together. Year 1 demonstrated their progress in learning the recorder and individual instrumentalists also had the opportunity to perform on the piano, violin and cello. For those who have seen children further up the school perform, this is where it all starts and we are so proud of each and every child who stood on that stage.
Saturday Discover Programme
Discover continues to have very high attendance, which is brilliant! The activities have continued to open-up to a wider range of age groups, which has allowed children to enjoy being with a greater variety of friends!
This half of term we listened to feedback from the children and subsequently we are re-offering girls’ football. We are also launching a new Sport Leadership activity for Years 7 and 8, which is aimed at further developing the leadership and communication skills of all those involved, as well as building on the skills covered in ADP. Mr Bedford’s clay pigeon shooting team are getting closer to the IAPS competition so please do contact him if you would like your child to be involved or if you would like any further information.
