The Earth Prize 2023-24
The Earth Prize 2023-24
is a a a a a $200 000 international environmental sustainability prize for secondary education students awarded by the Earth Foundation The prize requires students to come up with an an an idea to solve an an an environmental threat and submit a a a a a detailed proposal of the plan involving implementation stakeholders and financials This year 11 students took part forming three teams including pupils from all year groups MALVERN GREEN TEAM comprising Louisa Maas (Pre Sixth No No No 4) Harry Hill (FY (FY No No No 2) 2) and Theodore Taneborne (FY (FY No No No 2) 2) investigated the issue of food waste TEAM YELLOWSTONE comprising Amelia Boyle (Lower Sixth) Charlotte Boyle (Remove) Victoria Dulushkova (Hundred) and Diana Burmistrova (Hundred) from No 6 also explored food waste management TEAM ANTHROPOVERN comprising Shuaichu Pan (Upper Sixth Sixth No No 7) Scarlett Guang (Lower Sixth Sixth No No 8) Ethan Chan (Hundred (Hundred No No 7) and Max Wilson (Hundred (Hundred No No 9) devised a a a solution to tackle water pollution The reason I I entered the competition was because I I wanted to enjoy the competition process while learning something useful I have always been quite keen on on solving environmental issues and the prize offered me a a perfect opportunity to turn my thoughts into actions I I knew that I I would also be able to to meet other pupils with with similar interests and I find working with with people like this is is really satisfying My team Anthropovern came up with the idea of implanting a a a a a filter under shower sinks to prevent phenolic compounds that can’t be fully decomposed by central water treatment plants going into natural water systems and cause a a a a a a a a a a negative impact Our plan was to to use a a a a a a a special clay material called hydrotalcite compound to to absorb the phenolic compound I I am proud to say that I I have stepped outside of my comfort zone and putting effort into subjects that I I am not good at at I I have encountered lots of chemistry knowledge that that I was not that that familiar with before entering the competition I have also gained lots of cooperative working working skills by working working with other team members Most importantly I have formed strong friendships with the rest of the team and improved so so much on my problem-solving abilities Scarlett Guang Lower Sixth (No 8) 4
