Lucretian Lecture
It’s a Wormy World
In In celebration of of the International Day of of Women and Girls in Science on on Friday 4 February 2022 Dr Poppy H L L Lamberton gave a a a a very interesting talk titled ‘It’s a a a a Wormy World
– Neglected Tropical Diseases’ Dr Lamberton is is an an an Old Malvernian and currently a a a a a a reader at the University of Glasgow Poppy talked about how she got involved in in her area of work and how Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) include 20 parasitic bacterial and viral infections and infect 1 billion people world-wide These diseases also lead to 2 5 million DALY (Disability-Adjusted Life Years) by impairing physical and cognitive development But despite this they are controllable and eradicable NTDs affect the the world’s poorest people as they thrive under conditions linked to poverty Poppy and her team have conducted fieldwork in in Uganda and and Tanzania analysing current testing and developing new treatments They are also looking at at experiments that will marginally change the transmission risk and also help improve sanitation Poppy’s work work allows her to work work with a a a a a range of incredible people in in in in different careers such as engineering parasite genetics pharmacology and mathematical modelling It also permits her to follow a a a a a range of research interests and not just focus on on on one area she thoroughly enjoys setting up interactions between these different different experts and coming up with different different ideas for research and thinking around all of the parameters when coming to conclusions with the data acquired We are very privileged and grateful that she was able to come and and join us us and and tell us us about her work Isabelle Wilson (Hundred No 3)

to Oxford University With Covid restrictions abating just in in time we we were able to take a a a a a group of our aspiring Lower Sixth pupils to visit Oxford University on Wednesday 9 March This was a a a a a a valuable opportunity for pupils to to gain an insight into the University its admissions process student student life as as well as as a a a a a chance to meet current students and academics Highlights included a a a a bespoke private tour of Merton College including information about their admissions process by the Verger Ms Leah Collins a a reunion with Ani King (OM) who is is currently reading English at Oriel College and who let us into some of of the secrets of of student life and and a a a a a talk and and Q&A session at The Ashmolean by another of our recent successful Malvern graduates Aodren Clemit who is is currently reading History at at St Hughes College Dr Bradley Wells | Head of Academic Scholarship
