On 5 December, a number of Hundred and Sixth Form pupils took part in the steam distillation workshop organised by the Lucretian Society. In the workshop, pupils worked in small groups to distil aromatic scents from oranges, citrons, cinnamon sticks and various natural spices using the experiment set up. Steam distillation is a laboratory technique used to purify chemical compounds such as natural aromatic ingredients. As the workshop coincides with the upcoming festive season of Christmas, pupils were invited to take with them a sample of the distilled product to share with their friends and family. Pupils not only managed to distil a range of aromatic compounds, but were also invited to decorate the ChemisTree in the Science Department, by adding flasks filled with colourful chemicals and festive dressings. The workshop provides a valuable opportunity to stretch and challenge the school’s most able chemists and everyone participated has thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Lastly, we thank Dr Watson and the Chemistry lab technicians for preparing this engaging and exciting workshop for us!
