New inner mud flaps welded in and new rear arch sorted, to which strengthening struts were added as the original ones were rotten. Now that all the welding had been done on the lower half of the van our attention turned to the upper part, the windows!
This was the part we were dreading as none of the windows had ever been taken out from the rear of the van and we were not sure on how the sills and apertures were fairing. We cut the old rubbers and carefully removed all the glass to reveal all the bodywork. The louver window proved to be the trickiest as it was well and truly in place, I think the previous owner had glued them in! Anyway, we eventually got this out and to our amazement most of the window sills were still in factory condition, only one had to have some spot welding in a corner done to make it good.
The rear tailgate was removed and a newer one fitted; this was a bargain find on the marketplace at a mere £10 from a chap who was moving house. All we had to do was weld up the corners on the window aperture and make good as the main part of the door was still in great condition. Fitting the door was a bit fiddly and needed two of us to line it up with the shape of the van and get the door to close properly against the locking mechanism. New fixings were used as the old one had to be drilled out.
