Eating Disorders
See the “Supporting Pupils with Mental Health Problems” Policy. Weight loss in the majority of pupils of 10 to 20 years of age is by definition a problem. Sixth Form ‘grannies’ and ‘buddies’ are a fantastic source of information. House staff should watch carefully at mealtimes. Eating disorders may start as diets and will spread through the House if not stopped. Most eating disorders reveal an underlying issue with control etc. one cannot ignore it – saying nothing is not an option but you have to be careful not to make it a battle ground. Sufferers are experts at lying so be prepared to be manipulated. You must refer eating disorder concerns to the Designated Safeguarding Lead.
Electrical Equipment
All electrical equipment is PAT-tested annually. If equipment fails the test, it cannot be used in College. HouseMs should dispose of the equipment or give it to the pupil just before they return home, having emailed the parent to inform them that the equipment is not deemed safe in the UK and therefore cannot be used here. Sixth formers only are allowed to have kettles in their rooms. Pupils are not allowed electrical items such as refrigerators. Misuse of electrical equipment, such as hair straighteners, that have been accidentally left on, should result in confiscation after reasonable warning has been given. The new pupils’ papers outline which electrical equipment is permitted.
Examination Certificates
These are sent directly by the Exams Office to the home address of the Leaver. Pupils can give another address if they prefer – this is co-ordinated directly by the Exams Office. For current pupils, examination certificates are given to pupils who have to sign for them. Be warned – pupils have to contact the exam boards themselves if they lose any certificates.
Fire Notices
Houses have notices relating to fire procedures in each room or on prominent notice boards. See Appendix Eighteen. Please make sure that new arrivals (staff as well as pupils) are aware of the fire exits and procedures should the alarm sound.
Fire Practice
Two fire evacuations must be completed in the first week of every term. A day and night drill should be recorded. Night time is 11pm to 7am and day time is 7am to 11pm. Please ensure that you record the fire drill on the Fire Evacuation database that can be found via Filemaker. In addition, the sounders must be checked every week, which is done by Estates.
Hall
Hall takes place from 7.15pm to 8.45pm and it is crucial that the tutor on duty ensures that everyone can work peacefully. Pupils who do not work during Hall must be warned and placed in supervised Hall (in the dining room) if necessary – regardless of their age. The Sixth former on duty should supervise the dining room. FY pupils begin working in the dining room and are then allowed to earn the right to work in their studies, usually depending on their effort grades. Pupils are allowed to go to the Library (Grundy) for Hall but must stay there for the whole time – Lower School pupils need a chit.
Hall Pads
Every Sixth Form pupil is entitled to two Hall pads per term. Lower School pupils should have only one pad per term.
House Colours
These are awarded for showing commitment to the House. There are full colours and half-colours. Half-colours were known as Junior Colours previously. The boys are given ties and the girls lapel badges. School Togs stock the badges and ties and these are charged to House Funds. The badges come in batches of fifty.
