Boarders requesting attendance at birthday dinners, religious celebrations and other significant events
Boarders may request leaves of absence from school to attend birthday dinners, religious celebrations and other significant occasions. If parents are organising such a dinner, then it is a nice gesture to invite all pupils from a particular year group in a House, to avoid excluding individuals, especially with younger pupils. The College is usually supportive of such dinners, and these are often memorable occasions for pupils. The following arrangements are based on years of experience and allow for fairness, transparency and minimise the chance of any problems:
• An email request and confirmation of arrangements must be received by the HouseM (or, in their absence, Deputies.)
• College commitments take priority.
• Dinners should take place on Saturday evenings if possible, in order to minimise impact on Hall. Boarders should return to sleep in College.
• If mid-week, then pupils should leave and return as early as possible in order to minimise impact on Hall (e.g. 6 to 8pm).
• All usual school rules apply (e.g. smoking, vaping etc.)
• Lower School pupils (FY, Remove, Hundred) must not consume alcohol at any time.
• FY and Remove pupils must be accompanied by parents/guardians.
• Parental permission is required for pupils travelling in cars with other parents/guardians or pupils.
• Pupils may attend a maximum of three per term.
Additional points for Sixth Form
• Usual school rules apply. Alcoholic spirits may not be consumed at any time. Consumption of alcoholic spirits will lead to rustication.
• Under-18s may not consume alcohol unless supervised by a parent/guardian/teacher.
• If supervised by a parent/guardian/teacher, then under-18s may consume up to a maximum of two glasses of champagne/ wine/beer/cider. Email confirmation of supervision must be received by HouseM.
Saturday evenings
• Under-18s should report to Longy staff by 9.30pm to be breathalysed and show the receipt from the meal (if unsupervised). Pupils will not be able to enter Longy if they have consumed alcohol and they will return to Houses.
• 18-year-old pupils may consume alcohol with a meal up to the Longy limit (three glasses for U6th).
• 18-year-olds may go to the pub after their meal if they have a pub chit. They must respect their overall 3 drink limit.
