MAKING MALVERNIANS
?
Scientific Breakthroughs
Science is very much part of Malvern College’s DNA with a string of Nobel Prize Winners and even the UK Chief Medical Officer, Professor Sir Chris Whitty amongst our noted alumni. It is no surprise to see our current cohort of young scientists continuing to pioneer beyond the classroom:
Cora Z, from Malvern College Hong Kong won the Silver Award at the 2023 YP Hong Kong Science Fair for her wearable device called ‘Myo’ which is designed helps to alleviate upper arm pain following vaccinations. Over three days, Cora explained her prototype to delegates at the exhibition which attracts 20,000 visitors including high-ranking political figures. She was also interviewed by several media outlets and offered an internship with HK-based Rice Robotics. Cora received a total of 13,000 HKD for her efforts, and an eye-catching trophy. There was also a teacher leadership award of 4,000 HKD and the Malvern Design department will receive a 75,000 HKD development award.
Also from Malvern College Qingdao, Amanda X was part of the China Team which placed second at the International Space Settlement Design Competition. This event requires high school students to simulate the experience of working on an aerospace design team in creating a proposal for the establishment of a colony on another world. Amanda too is no stranger to accumulating academic recognition having also secured a Gold award In the Australian national chemistry competition.
Meanwhile, Molly L from Malvern College Qingdao has received an individual Gold Award at the 2023 iGEM (International Genetic Engineering Machine) design competition which challenges students to ‘push the boundaries’ of synthetic biology to tackle the issues facing the world. For the event students are required to build and test their own designs using interchangeable biological parts! This is the latest in a long list of awards for Molly in Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics Olympiads and competitions from the UK, Australia and the United States.
Malvern Award Gold Winners
The Malvern Award was created to recognize outstanding levels of pupil achievement and performance across a wide range of activities. Launched in 2022, the award has Gold, Silver and Bronze levels and places a significant emphasis on leadership and role model behaviour. Examples of success criteria include exceptional contributions to school sport, music or drama and leadership positions within School Houses, the CCF and Super / Co-Curricular programmes as well as community work and academic competitions.
The first Year 13 pupils at Malvern College UK to win the prestigious Gold Award are: Shuaichu P, Isabelle W, Isabella B, Enya N, Nadezhda M and Alexander G.
