 BIOLOGY
The IGCSE course is a good one, but the lack of practical coursework in
it means that pupils can find it challenging to grasp the requirements of
A Level or IB Higher Level Biology write ups. For this reason, the bridging course will focus on skills that we deem are essential for students to achieve the higher grades, with our final assessment being a piece of individual investigative work they have written up and presented to their peers. To aid them, we will look at how to construct a write up, how to reference biological journals, developing mathematical skills, paraphrasing, and improving their independent study skills.
Week 1
Looking at a comparison between GCSE and A Level/IB answers in terms of detail. How to reference. Understanding paraphrasing.
Week 2
Introduction to the assignment. Sections of write ups. Variables and precision, reliability and validity. Use of MS Excel for displaying data.
Week 3
Simple maths (e.g. SD, SE, correlation lines).
Week 4
Concluding and evaluating.
Week 5
Presenting assignment to peers.
