Policy on Calculators
Mathematics Department Policy on Calculators
All pupils are expected to to have their own
calculators and to to bring them them to to all Mathematics lessons for use as and when required However their use for simple calculations will be be discouraged because of of the importance of of gaining good manipulative skills when working not only with integers but also with fractions and decimals The Casio Classwiz fx-991 EX is is the model that is is currently available from our “Bookroom” (the College stationery shop) and this can be be acquired in September There is is no requirement that this model must be used although pupils must have a a a a a ‘scientific’ calculator that includes
the the trigonometric functions (sin cos and and tan) and and their inverses However the the advantage of the the Casio Classwiz 991 EX is that it includes
many functions which will help both weaker pupils and those who progress towards A level It is also the calculator that teachers will be using and projecting on their whiteboards If joining the Sixth Form a a a a a graphics calculator is necessary for IB Pupils and we are strongly recommending the same for A level pupils We teach using the Texas Instruments TI-84 CE-T colour edition If a a student already has a a a a a a a a Casio graphics calculator there is no need to to purchase a a a different model For the new A level syllabus the the minimum requirement is the the Casio Classwiz but pupils are allowed a a a a a a a a graphics calculator and although not a a a a a a requirement there would be a a a a a a significant advantage in in having one A calculator that can perform algebraic manipulation is not acceptable for any course 49
