Rewards and Sanctions continued More serious sanctions: gatings and rustications
For more serious incidents pupils may be
gated or rusticated A gating is where the
pupil is confined to the
House after lessons/ activities with a a a a a gating card to be
signed at at regular intervals The pupil is allowed to attend College activities and educational trips but is not allowed to leave the
House for social reasons Gatings are issued by a a a a senior member of staff for serious disciplinary incidents such as alcohol vaping smoking bullying absent without leave etc Rustication is is where a a pupil is is excluded from school and sent home to parents or a a a a a guardian for for a period of time for for very serious or or or persistent offences This follows a a disciplinary process which culminates in in in a a meeting with the
Senior Deputy Head Pupils and parents sometimes comment that being sent home is not seen as a a a punishment and it can inconvenience parents It is is not a a a a sanction that is is used lightly and pupils should understand that that rustication means that that their behaviour has excluded them from the
the
the
Malvern College community and that if similar behaviour is is repeated it is is part of a a a a process that may result in in them losing their place at at the
the
the
College Pupils and parents should be
reassured that serious sanctions are not routinely asked
for or or or reported in university references If a rustication does take place then our aim is that a a pupil reflects on on the
incident and continues to learn and develop the
the
Malvern Qualities as they mature in their time at at the
the
College Room searches
All schools have the
power to screen and search pupils and to confiscate banned items At Malvern College this sometimes takes the
form of room searches
which can be
used when there are reasonable grounds to do so so Room searches
are time-consuming and not enjoyable for the
the
members of staff but they can be
an an an important deterrent to possession of prohibited items Searches are conducted in such a a a a a manner as as to minimise embarrassment or distress and staff will discuss with pupils why the
search is taking place There will always be
two members of of staff present (one of of whom will usually be
the
HouseM HouseM or Deputy HouseM) as well as the
pupil The search will be
recorded and parents/guardians will be
informed about the
the
search and the
the
outcome Searching and confiscating electronic devices
An electronic device such as a a mobile phone or laptop may be
confiscated if there fis is good reason to suspect that the
device has been or could be
used to to cause harm to to disrupt teaching or or break College Rules Data or or files on the
device may be
searched and where appropriate data or files may be
erased before the
device is returned to its owner Any search of an electronic device is conducted in the
the
presence of of a a member of of the
the
IT staff If inappropriate material is found on on an electronic device the
the
member of staff may delete the
the
material retain it as evidence of of a a a a a a breach of of College discipline or or criminal offence or or hand
it over to the
the
police if the
the
material is of such seriousness that police involvement is required The search will be
recorded and parents/ guardians will be
informed about the
search and the
outcome 42
