An Overview of Pastoral Care
Visitors to Malvern College often comment on the friendly and welcoming atmosphere, and the relaxed and respectful relationships between staff and pupils. Pastoral care at Malvern is based on strong and considerate relationships between adults and pupils and between pupils of all ages.
Boarding houses with strong staff teams provide family environments where each pupil
is known as an individual and supported to thrive within the wider College community. This starts with the buddy system as new pupils join Malvern and it continues with Peer Mentors and the Head of House team. Strong pastoral care is underpinned by the Malvern Qualities such as kindness and collaboration. It is supported by the full boarding ethos which creates the time and opportunity to develop strong relationships.
House competitions allow pupils to taste a wide range of activities, share success and failure together and the House provides the springboard from which pupils develop their strengths and passions amongst the many opportunities provided by the College.
Senior pupils are trained in Mental Health First Aid awareness, peer mentoring skills, leadership and safeguarding. Pupil leadership is a key feature across the pupil body and pupils contribute to School Council, Lower School Council, House Councils, Head of House teams, Chapel Prefects and the
Pupil Thrive group.
Life can generate numerous challenges, particularly when going through the process of development from adolescence to adulthood. Pupils are educated about many issues during the Life Skills programme and there is strong communication with parents and guardians. Any well-ordered community has a framework in place to guide its members. Malvern has
a system of rewards and sanctions which recognises positive contributions to the community and signals what we deem to be unacceptable. Above this clear foundation, there are many layers of guidance available, as pupils learn to work with others, enjoy positive relationships, take responsibility,
and show leadership.
