Saburō Hasegawa
In 1955 and 1965, Gary became an
occasional student at the American
Academy of Asian Studies where he
studied under Japanese calligrapher
and painter, Saburō Hasegawa, and
Eastern Philosophy Scholar, Alan
Watts. Gary was introduced by
Hasegawa to the treatment of
Chinese landscape painting as a
meditative practice, which inspired
him to explore something equivalent
in his own poetry – Mountains and
Rivers Without End, which was
completed and published 40 years
later.
