binā fī mā nazal innaka laṭīfun lam tazal ulṭuf binā wa’l-Muslimīn. Keep
reciting this until you reach your home town Amad.’ After reaching
his home town, he lived two months longer, until he passed away.
It has been related that there was a tribe in the desert known by
the name Āl Mas ud, they had an extreme affection towards Ḥabīb
c
c Umar al- Aṭṭās. They would recite his Rātib regularly wherever they
c
went. Even the women and children were regular in its recitation
to the extent that they had memorised it. One day, their enemy,
consisting of a large army intended to attack them.
During the night when they were reciting the Rātib, some spies
from the opposition came in search of their whereabouts, so that
the enemy could attack them. As they approached, they heard
them reciting the litany: ‘Bismillāhi āmannā billahi wa man yu’min
billāhi lā khawfun aleyhi.’ On hearing this, one of the spies said, ‘I

feel sympathetic towards them, do not attack them under any
circumstance!’ Then they returned back to their people, defying
their command.
The Rātib ul- Aṭṭās is a litany filled with lights and secrets, which
c
contains worldly and spiritual benefits. In addition to a long life,
increase in sustenance, protection and forgiveness of sins, and the
reward for remembering Allah, the reciter will receive according
