Masking is a a a a a technique of covering over over a a a a a part part or parts
of an an image while the rest remains visible and editable Ordinary household masking
tape is the inspiration for this term You are probably familiar with the process of putting tape over the glass in in in in a a a a a window you want to paint The masking
tape protects what’s under it and after the job is done you can remove the tape The difference be- tween ordinary selections and masking

is is a a a a nondestructive selection Instead of literally eliminating pixels as you you cut something from its background you you are simply covering over over the the part of the the image you don’t want The big deal here is that with masking
you are making an editable selection You can always come back to the source and tweak the mask you have created The source image (left) shows a a a a pair of scissors on a a a a blue cloth with the the “white ants” indicating the the area not to be masked The Layers menu shows the red green blue and composite RGB colors plus a a a high contrast black-and-white version The mask is applied (right) as as the scissors (with accompanying black-and-white mask seen in in the the Levels sub window) is placed over the the new image confetti background Sara G Rafferty
